Ballinora GAA Club organised the Ballinora 5K Challenge on May 30th to June 1st
Ballinora 5K Challenge
Given the unfortunate circumstances of the Covid-19 crises we were unable to host the Karen Fenton Memorial Run this year.
Ballinora GAA Club wished to take up the challenge laid down by CUH Charity Ambassador, and Munster and Ireland rugby legend, Peter O’Mahony and to support the fundraising efforts for a state of the art cancer sequencing machine for CUH. Also the club wanted to help the Fenton family honour Karen with a socially distant alternative to the Memorial Run that was due to be hosted on April 19th, 2020. The club, and in particular the adult teams across both codes, came together to discuss and organise this special event over the June bank holiday weekend from May 30th to June 1st. The Fenton family wish to express their gratitude to the club for this event and for their continued support.
The event was a great success on a fabulously sunny June bank holiday weekend. There was fantastic participation from the club and the community and some great photos including those showing the place looking so well thanks to Ballinora Tidy Towns. Damien O'Sullivan and Siobhan Holland also took up an extended challenge and ran the "Karen Fenton loop" 8 times, marathon style, on a hot and sunny morning on May 30th. Well done to Damien and Siobhan! Well done also to others who came out to support including Paul Kelly and Anne Wolfe who ran half of the marathon distance in support of Damien & Siobhan and to Mark Wolfe who also got in his own marathon in Ballinora on the day!
Damien also provided amazing support for the event including providing assistance with artwork, promoting the event and putting together the special video below. We have now raised in excess of €5k that will go direct to the purchase of this important cancer sequencing machine for Cork University Hospital. The machine will be purchased in Karen's name and will leave a lasting legacy to cancer patients in Cork and wider Munster region.
Thanks to everyone for your support!
